Building with Irwin Homes: Allison Hohl’s Story

It took three years of looking for the perfect home builder for Allison Hohl and her husband to settle on Irwin Homes.

They’d been through countless other homes in 36 months, each feeling too similar to the previous — until they toured an Irwin Homes build during the Parade of Homes.

“We fell in love with the house we ended up building,” said Hohl. “The design was very unique and different and didn’t feel cookie cutter. It felt like there was intention in all the design.”

The Irwin Homes’ quality is what stood out to Hohl and her husband after visiting brand-new builds in Calgary, AB. She said every house there was completely different from the next, and it felt like Irwin Homes was one of the only builders bringing that “flair and uniqueness” to the Winnipeg market.

“We also loved how family oriented the business felt,” she added. “We never felt like it was just another build to Irwin, and that they genuinely cared about our vision and all the details that mattered to us.”

Irwin Homes is a third-generation family business that’s built its brand over 50 years through honest, genuine service. Hohl said from the very beginning of the process when they first committed to the contract, the communication was clear to her and her husband. Though they worried about the build timeline leaving their family of six stranded, Irwin Homes finished construction on their house five weeks earlier than expected, alleviating all of that stress for Hohl.

Hohl had a very clear vision of what she wanted their house to look like when it was done, and she was struggling to find a designer who understood it. After she met with Irwin Homes Design Manager Taylor Bishop, Hohl was able to relax.

“It was like ‘finally, someone who gets it.’”

The Scandinavian-inspired home features expansive windows that flood the grand living room with natural light, highlighting a striking fireplace wall with custom millwork. White oak accents throughout add warmth and texture, while a custom plaster hood fan anchors the kitchen with understated elegance. Curated lighting selections enhance each space, and thoughtfully designed cabinetry and tailored details create a cohesive aesthetic rich in character and personality.  Its artful interior was recently on display in the Winnipeg Art Gallery’s Home Tour.

“Building as custom home can feel really overwhelming,” said Hohl. “It’s hard to make that initial leap from just buying a house, but Irwin made it seem like such a positive and exciting experience. It felt like they were just as excited about the project as we were.”
